Every now and again, we get a reader asking us about faster restarts in Windows XP. They remembered that in Windows 95/98, holding down the Shift key while restarting got things done a lot quicker; and they wanted to know if this works in Windows XP.
While this worked in older versions of Windows, starting with Windows NT 4.0, this no longer worked. There really isn't a quicker way to shut down your Windows XP PC. If you hold down the Shift key during a restart, the computer will still go through the entire restart sequence.
